The psychology of inspiration has always fascinated me. What enables one to create beautiful works of art, music, architecture, enterprise or poetry? Some would say that inspiration is the culmination of one's life experiences. Yet if that were true what enabled Mozart to compose such beautiful music at such a tender age.
"Imagination is more important than knowledge." Albert Einstein
Where does this internal voice come from that can describe in such detail the mathematical precision of an orchestral piece? How does one's mind's eye look at a slab of granite and see the sculpture within? Is it what some call God, a universal intelligence that surrounds us all?
"Where beams of imagination play, The memory's soft figures melt away." Alexander Pope
Since I was reconnected with my Lady after loosing touch for over fifteen years the visions flooding into my psyche are too numerous to mention. I have even taken to calling her my Muse on occasion. Perhaps it is her aura as an artist rubbing off on me? She is an exceptional photographer and quite the painter too. I've added building a world class studio and gallery to showcase her work and that of other contemporary artists to my goal list. She has even inspired me to create a clothing line to showcase her beauty.
The question I have is did these visions come from her, that universal intelligence or were they there all along waiting to come out at just the right moment? It may be futile to try to define inspiration in this way. In the effort of discovery however one can only come to better understand their own creative process if not the universe as a whole.
My own belief is that everything in this life happens for a reason. There are lessons we are meant to learn from the events of our lifetime even if we can't see them as we're walking through them. As much as I hate to say it there is a reason that 15 years ago it wasn't the right time for my Lady and I to be together.
The trials and experiences of my life have molded me into someone quite different than I was then. It was my documenting of my struggles, vision and determination in this blog that drew her back into my life. Ironically at a time where as she says I'm, "empire building." I chuckle when she calls it that.
I've garnered a modest reputation within local fashion circles for my efforts through Emerald City Fashion Week to draw attention to the emerging apparel industry in the Puget Sound. I shrugged off numerous mentions of starting my own clothing label, yet now I'm looking at starting one. Has the universe conspired this whole time to bring me to this place? If so why did it choose me? I will make every effort to be a good steward of this vision, to honor the blessing the universe has brought me. While I still may not understand fully where the vision came from I view it as my sacred duty to bring it to life.
What inspires you? What's your vision? Trust in the universe it is on your side.
Great post, Steven. We all have unlimited creativity inside of us, tapping into it is the trick. Picasso needed despair, Goethe couldn't write without a rotting apple in his desk drawer. I'm glad your muse is in a joyful relationship.
ReplyDeleteI always say, it's now what you see, but how you see it. Your imagination must be in focus, not just your eyes. :-)
